frequently asked questions

getting started

  • Ghost Social is a platform built to lower the barrier to connection. Instead of browsing or swiping through profiles, you talk with Ghost, an AI companion, and get curated introductions to people who are truly compatible.

    We strive to be:

    • Intentional: Every question we ask and every match we create has a purpose.

    • Authentic: Voice captures emotion, nuance, and intent in a way text and photos can’t, revealing personality in its most genuine form.

    • Private: Your trust and privacy are our priority. We optimize for consent and transparency in every experience we build.

  • Ghost is designed for real human connection, not performance or endless browsing.

You do not create a public profile or swipe through people. You talk to Ghost about who you are and what kind of connections you want, whether that is friendship, dating, and/or professional. Ghost builds a private, holistic profile of you, and you get matches only when there is strong compatibility.

  • Ghost is an artificial intelligence agent that asks you questions about who you are and who you’d like to meet in order for our system to curate thoughtful introductions. You can speak to Ghost verbally or via messaging.

  • To create an account:

    1. Enter your email address.

    2. Check your email for a secure sign in link.

    3. Tap the link to return to the app and create your account.

You do not need a password. Each sign in link is secure and time limited.

Once your account is set up, you’ll be asked to provide your first name, the city where you live, and at least one existing social media profile.

Unless your email is already on the allowlist, you’ll be asked to verify your university affiliation by using a “.edu” email or uploading a picture proof (e.g. transcript, diploma, etc.). Once verified, you’ll be automatically added to the community associated with your university and get full access to the platform.

At this time, you’ll only be able to fully use the Ghost app if you belong to a community on the platform. If you don’t, you’ll be placed on our waitlist and we will notify you as soon as this restriction is lifted.

profile

  • You create your profile by having conversations with Ghost and linking your social media profiles.

When talking or messaging with Ghost, the AI will synthesize your answers to the questions it poses in order to capture a nuanced understanding of who you are and who you’d like to meet.

You can view your profile by clicking on the profile icon in the top right corner of the app. You won’t be able to make edits yourself: just let Ghost know what you want to change or add, and it will be updated for you.

Remember that your profile remains private, meaning that no one besides you will see it. The more you share, the better your matches will be.

  • You can communicate with Ghost by talking or typing.

    To talk with Ghost:

    1. Go to the home screen of the app.

    2. Tap the “talk” button to start the conversation.

    3. Make sure you’ve enable microphone permissions on your device. You can change this anytime in your device settings.

    4. Ghost will ask you questions to understand who you are and what types of connections you are looking for to create your profile.

    5. You can skip any questions. No one will hear your conversations.

    6. To end the conversation, simply tap the “end” button again or switch tabs.

You can message with Ghost by tapping the “type” icon in the home tab.

We recommend using voice for longer conversations to build your profile and messaging for quicker exchanges.

  • Your profile stays up to date by communicating with Ghost. As you answer more questions and share changes about your life, Ghost adjusts your profile automatically.

For quick edits, using type mode might be faster, but to add nuance and context, talk mode is best.

Note that it may take a few minutes for your profile to be updated as we process any new information.

To update your name, you’ll need to contact our team at support@ghostsocial.ai

  • To update your profile picture:

    1. Go to your profile by tapping on the icon in the top right corner.

    2. Tap on the camera icon under your profile picture.

    3. Upload the picture you’d like to use.

This photo will be visible to your matches.

  • The people you’ve matched with can only see:

    • Your first name

    • Your profile photo

    • Your city

    • Your social profile link(s)

    • Communities you’re a part of

    • Why you were matched

No one can view your full profile. Other members cannot browse or search for you.

matches

  • After Ghost gets to know you via short conversations:

    1. Your profile is added to our graph neural network.

    2. Our system will identify the most compatible matches for you within your communities.

    3. Every week on the same day and at the same time there will be a match drop: you’ll get notified if you’ve got a new match.

    4. At this point, you’ll be able to see your match’s profile picture, location, social links, and communities, and context about why you were matched.

    5. A group chat will be created and Ghost will prompt you with a personalized icebreaker to get the conversation started.

    6. All members of the match will need to send a message within 24 hours of the match being created, otherwise it will disappear forever.

You can choose to unmatch at any point.

  • A match drop is the moment when matches are delivered. Match drops take place at the same time and on the same day every week.

The countdown in the Home tab indicates how much time there is before the next match drop.

  • Many factors impact how matches are created, including but not limited to:

    • Mutual compatibility: our matching engine has reasons to believe that all parties involved will benefit from the match. Specifically, it takes into consideration alignment in the type of connection you’re looking for, physical proximity, and hobbies or interests in common.

    • Engagement level: the more you’re active on the platform and responsive to previous matches, the more likely you are to get a match.

    • Previous feedback: after every match, you’ll be asked to provide feedback about it, which is then used to inform future matches. Over time, your matches will get better.

The reasons you were matched will be visible to both you and your matches.

  • Your matches can see:

    • Your first name

    • Your profile picture

    • Your city

    • Your social profiles

    • Your communities

    • The reason you were matched

Your full profile (i.e. anything in the “Your private profile” section) and your conversations with Ghost remain will always private.

  • Matches are delivered once a week, at the same day and time. The timer in the Home tab indicates how much time is left before your next match drop.

We always prioritize quality over quantity, so we cannot guarantee that you’ll get a match. It is dependent on the information you provide, your recent matches, your engagement level, the communities you’ve joined, among other factors.

  • You’ll get up to 2 high-quality matches per week. Sometimes fewer, if there aren’t great fits. We’d rather wait than force a bad intro.

How many you get depends on a few key factors:

    • Compatibility: You’ll only be matched when there’s a strong mutual fit. We prioritize the highest-quality connections first, so every intro is meaningful.

    • Engagement: Being active and responsive increases your chances of getting matched.

    • Communities: The more communities you’re part of, and the more active they are, the more opportunities there are to match.

You can pause matches at any time if you’d like to opt out of match drops.

  • Yes. For a match to become permanent, at least two people need to reply in the group chat within 24 hours.

If no one, or only one person responds, the match will expire and the conversation will disappear.

Expired matches can’t be recovered or rematched.

  • No. You’ll only get matched with people who have been verified and belong to the same community as you.

  • The short answer is that you could get both. The long answer: weekly matches within communities are limited to 1:1, but matches done as part of events may be as large as 15 people.

  • Yes. To opt out of weekly matches:

    1. Go to your profile by tapping on the icon in the top right corner.

    2. Click on the settings icon in the bottom right corner of your profile page.

    3. Tap on “Pause weekly matches”

You’ll be able to resume matches at any time.

  • To remove yourself from a match:

    1. Go to the Matches tab.

    2. Select the match’s conversation.

    3. Click on the three dot menu in the top right corner of the chat.

    4. Tap on “Unmatch.”

Once you’ve confirmed, the conversation with the match will be deleted from your inbox and you will never get this match again. The other members of the match will not be notified.

If it is a 1:1 match, the conversation will be deleted for the other person as well. If it is a group match, you will be removed from the conversation and other members will remain a part of it.

    This action cannot be undone.

  • In the event of harmful behavior within a match, we encourage you to report the match to our team so we can take action and keep our platform safe for everyone.

To report a match, you have to:

    1. Go to the Matches tab.

    2. Select the match’s conversation.

    3. Click on the three dot menu in the top right corner of the chat.

    4. Tap on “Report.”

Once you’ve confirmed, our team will get notified of the report and take appropriate action.

This will also result in an unmatch action. The other members of the match will not be notified of your report.

If it is a 1:1 match, the conversation will be deleted for the other person as well. If it is a group match, you will be removed from the conversation and other members will remain a part of it.

    This action cannot be undone.

  • If you joined through an event, the host may have added your email to an allowlist so you can access that event experience.

When you sign up, you’ll be included in event-only matching with other attendees.

Your information is private and used only for that event unless you choose to opt in to more. Participation is always opt-in.

If you’re not automatically added, please contact the event organizer to confirm your email is on the allowlist.

If you’d like to receive weekly matches beyond the event, you can opt in at any time:

    • Tap the timer on the home screen and select “Get weekly matches”, or

    • Go to Settings → Join weekly matches

communities

  • Right now, communities are based on universities. To join one, you’ll need to verify your affiliation (alumni, student, staff, etc).

You can verify it in one of three ways:

    • Allowlist: If your email has been added to the community’s allowlist by an event host, you’ll be added automatically.

    • .edu email: Enter your university email and validate your access using a verification code.

    • Picture proof: Upload a diploma, transcript, or another document that shows your affiliation. Our team will review and approve it.

  • No, you cannot see the members of a community, unless you are matched with them.

  • Currently, you will not be able to search through the communities that are on the Ghost Social platform. You will only be able to see the communities you have already joined.

  • Not quite. Communities are verified, so you’ll need to prove your affiliation (like being an alum, student, or staff) to join.

  • To leave a community:

    1. Go to the Communities tab.

    2. Tap on the community you’d like to leave.

    3. Click on “Leave community.”

Once confirmed, you will be removed from the community and it will no longer appear in your list of communities.

  • Community creation is currently only available to our partners. You can apply on our website to become a community partner: www.ghostsocial.ai/apply

If selected, you will be given access to the host portal, where you will be able to create a community, invite members, and view analytics, among other actions.
